Smoke Alarm Requirements as per Queensland Legislation

Smoke alarms in Queensland must:

Be photoelectric and comply with AS3786 2014.
Be hardwired to mains power with a backup 10-year non-removable battery.
Be interconnected so all alarms activate together.
Contains ionisation sensors.
Be replaced if they are older than 10 years.

Smoke Alarm Installation Requirements:

On every floor.
In each bedroom.
In hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the dwelling.
If no hallway exists, install it between the bedroom and other areas.
If no bedrooms are present, install in the most likely exit path.

Compliance Deadlines:

Existing homes, townhouses, and units must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by 1 January 2027.
From 1 January 2022, new and renovated dwellings and homes being sold or rented must comply with photoelectric smoke alarm requirements.
