At Level Plumbing Tamworth we are asked the same question at the start of most small bathroom projects. Can the toilet go over there, and can the shower swap sides. The honest answer depends far less on the size of the room than on where the waste line already runs, and that is what this page explains.

Houses across Tamworth and the surrounding towns we service, including Armidale, Gunnedah and Narrabri, were built over a wide span of decades, and the drainage beneath them was laid out around the fixture positions of the day. On a concrete slab, those waste pipes are cast into the floor. On a suspended timber floor, we usually have room to work underneath. That single difference changes the cost of a layout more than any fitting you choose.

 

Which Fixtures Are Expensive to Move?

Not every fixture carries the same cost when it shifts position. Roughly, from easiest to hardest:

  • Taps and mixers. Supply lines are small and flexible, so relocating tapware is usually the least disruptive change in the room.
  • Basins and vanities. The waste is narrow and the run is short, which gives us room to reroute without touching the main line.
  • Showers. A shower needs a new waste and a new fall, and the floor has to be reset and waterproofed again once the drain moves.
  • Baths. A freestanding bath can be more forgiving than a built-in one because the waste and trap sit in a different place, so tell us which you are considering early.
  • Toilets. The pan connector runs to the main soil line, and moving it is the change most likely to mean opening the floor.

None of these is impossible. The point is that two layouts that look equally simple on paper can differ a great deal in cost, and the difference is usually settled before you choose a single tile.

 

What We Check Before Pricing a New Layout

Before we price a layout change we look at how the floor is built, where the existing soil line sits, how much fall is available between the fixture and that line, and whether the wall you want to use is load-bearing or carries other services. On a suspended floor we can often confirm all of it from below in one visit.

Where a change does turn out to be costly, there is usually a second option that gets most of the benefit. Rotating a vanity, replacing a bath with a walk-in shower inside the same footprint, or moving a doorway rather than a fixture can open up a small room without disturbing the drainage at all.
