Are you planning a bathroom or kitchen renovation? Have you considered the potential challenges of moving plumbing fixtures?

That said, is it really worth it?

Do I Really Need to Move the Fixtures?

Most of the time, renovators, especially those on a tight budget, do everything possible to make their design work without having to move fixtures. That is because it is usually seen as too difficult and costly, and their limited funds could be better spent on other areas like tiles or fittings.

As such, it is always a good idea to chat with a builder, plumber or designer for inspiration and ideas on how to make the fixtures you have work to your advantage.

If you have a small or older style bathroom that would really benefit from being rearranged in order to make the most of the space you have though, then moving fixtures is the smart decision otherwise you will likely find yourself severely limited in your options.

What Do I Need to Consider?

First, you must consider the level of difficulty to complete the job. If you are looking for a two-storey house renovation, then they are often quite more challenging as they may require the first floor ceiling to be removed to access existing plumbing and, at the same time, install new pipework.

If your home is on a concrete slab, however, changes may mean having to break up and remove the existing slab to enable new pipework, then a new slab will need to be laid again. All of these things add to the overall cost of your renovation and should be carefully considered.

You will also need to have a chat with your local council to see if you need to submit plans for approval and also to see if there are any regulations in your area regarding moving plumbing fixtures.

You do not want to get caught out breaching council code!

What Is the First Step?

If you decide that moving fixtures is your best option, do not EVER try to do it yourself. Apart from it being illegal, it is also dangerous, and you could very well end up doing damage that will ultimately end up costing you much more.

The only way to know for sure the potential cost and difficulty of your project is to get a quote from a licenced plumber. They will be able to give you the right advice to make sure you are getting the most for your renovation money and ensure you are realistic with your vision.
